Our client is seeking a Senior Accountant to support their organization and residential development division. In this role, you will play a key part in the financial management of active construction projects, working closely with the Controller as well as development and construction teams. This position is ideal for an experienced accounting professional who thrives in a fast-paced, project-driven environment and brings strong expertise in construction accounting, project accounting, cost tracking, and financial reporting.


Key Responsibilities:
Project & Cost Accounting
  • Maintain accurate project-level accounting for residential development and construction projects
  • Track and analyze construction costs, including land acquisition, soft costs, and hard costs
  • Prepare and reconcile construction work in progress (WIP) schedules and cost allocations
  • Partner with development and construction teams to ensure consistent and accurate cost coding
  • Support job cost reporting, margin analysis, and provide detailed variance explanations at the project level

Month-End & Financial Reporting
  • Prepare month-end journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations related to development projects
  • Perform actual-to-budget and forecast variance analysis, identifying key drivers, trends, and risks
  • Assist in the preparation of internal financial reporting packages and provide ad hoc analysis to support decision-making

Systems & Process Improvement
  • Work within integrated accounting systems (experience with Newstar is a strong asset)
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of cost accounting processes, controls, and reporting tools
  • Support the standardization of project setup, cost codes, and reporting structures
  • Assist with year-end audit preparation, including working papers related to inventory, WIP, and development costs

Operational & General Accounting
  • Process accounts payable, including invoice entry, payment coordination, and vendor relationship management
  • Manage daily deposits and cash application activities
  • Prepare statements of adjustments for property closings
  • Support GST/HST reporting related to development and construction activities
  • Assist with internal controls, documentation, and adherence to accounting policies
  • Perform other accounting and finance duties as assigned by the Controller

Qualifications
  • 4+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in construction, residential real estate development, or project-based accounting
  • Strong foundation in cost accounting, job costing, and construction work in progress (WIP)
  • Highly proficient in Excel, including financial modeling and data analysis
  • Experience working within integrated accounting systems; exposure to Newstar is a strong asset
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Clear and confident communicator, able to translate financial information for non-finance stakeholders
  • Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or a related field

What Will Make You Stand Out
  • Direct experience in residential real estate development, homebuilding, or project-based accounting
  • Advanced Excel skills, including financial modeling and data analysis
  • Hands-on experience with Newstar or similar financial systems
  • Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with construction and project management teams to drive financial insights and accuracy
