Job Description

Our client is an exciting new NGO that has been recently funded by the government to drive women’s initiatives domestically and abroad. As the organization has grown tremendously in a short period of time, the finance team is growing as well. We have an immediate requirement for a Financial Analyst who can provide financial support to the finance team and our colleagues across the organization during this time of unprecedented transformation. Our client is building, innovating, and growing to achieve an unparalleled impact on gender equality and women’s rights around the world. In collaboration with Program Managers, you will coordinate program team deadline requirements for mid-term and annual financial reporting to institutional and family foundations and develop/maintain cashflow by project stream, reconciling monthly to GL for review and discussion with the Controller. The Financial Analyst will review and approve monthly bank reconciliations and provide the Controller with financial support for quarterly Finance committee meetings. As well as coordinate overall organizational budget and forecasting exercises and provide ongoing reporting and support to budget holders within the organization.

The temporary Financial Analyst plays a crucial role in supporting the financial operations of the grant-making function in a non-profit environment. Working closely with the finance and programs teams, the Financial Analyst provides expertise in financial compliance, budgeting, and analysis. They actively collaborate with Program Officers to assist in selecting grantee partners, develop financial tools, and enhance the financial capacity of grantees. This role involves budget management, forecasting, variance analysis, and monthly reporting for the programs department.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Grant Administration:

  • Provide financial expertise during the grantee selection process, including reviewing applications, conducting organizational and risk assessments, and performing budget analyses.
  • Process grant payments according to the schedule and coordinate follow-up to ensure grantees receive funds in a timely manner.
  • Offer financial and capacity-building support to a portfolio of over 50 grantee partners globally.
  • Work closely with the grant-making team to understand program context, and feminist funding approaches, and maintain effective relationships with grantees.
  • Develop tools and activities to strengthen the financial capacity of grantees.
  • Review and analyze grantees' financial reports and budgets, providing feedback in partnership with Program Officers.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to international financial transactions, including exchange rates, country-specific regulations, and fees.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly and quarterly internal management reports, donor reports, and variance analyses.

Financial Reporting:

  • Conduct detailed reviews and analyses of grantees' financial reports and budgets, providing insights and feedback alongside Program Officers.
  • Prepare financial reports for donors, working closely with the finance and Global Programs teams.
  • Monitor compliance with donor contribution agreements and regulatory requirements, including those from Global Affairs Canada and the Canada Revenue Agency.
  • Support donor and organizational audit processes as required.
  • Contribute to the organization's annual budget process and forecasts.

The ideal candidate will hold an undergraduate degree in finance or accounting and have at least three years of experience in financial roles, including grants administration, project financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and grant payments. You will have a minimum of two years of experience in the not-for-profit sector or international development, with exposure to multiple programs and funders. The successful candidate will have experience managing foreign exchange transactions and analysis for various programs in multiple currencies.

You must have excellent written, verbal, and communication skills in both English and Spanish, with additional languages such as French or Arabic considered an asset. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills are required, as well as the ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams. Flexibility and adaptability to changing circumstances and priorities, as well as the ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, are critical for success.

The candidate should be proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, financial/accounting software, and GSuite, with familiarity in Salesforce or SAGE a huge asset. They must demonstrate high ethical standards, integrity, and the ability to handle sensitive information confidentially.

Applicants must be legally eligible to work in Canada and ideally located in Ontario for this temporary contract. The ability to work during core business hours is expected, and availability to start mid-October is needed.
